10 Best Non-Rock Songs By Rock Artists
5. My Second Album - Stone Temple Pilots
Stone Temple Pilots were never really a band that fit in with the alternative genre to begin with. While their first few records caught a lot of flak for riding the coattails of grunge, the aesthetics of these rockers out of California seemed much more in tune with '70s classic rock than the indie style sweeping the nation. Even if there were plenty of distinctive qualities about STP, jazz certainly wasn't one of them.
Coming right at the end of their sophomore effort Purple, My Second Album is one of the most infamous piss takes to ever come out of the alternative movement. Instead of having Scott Weiland perform, this lounge style ballad is performed by Richard Peterson. Given that the rest of the record has a lot to do with hard rock, this is one of those sonic left turns that is enough to give you whiplash.
However, it seems that the band are kind of in on their own joke here. It's not completely out of place considering there's a song on this record called Lounge Fly, but the real detail is in the lyrics, where they basically mock the pressure that comes with making a sophomore album. My Second Album doesn't really add much to the album it's a part of, and yet the endless amount of charm ends the record more perfectly than anyone could have asked for.
