10 Best Non-Rock Songs By Rock Artists
4. Big Bad Bill - Van Halen
Diver Down has been an outlier in Van Halen's catalog ever since it was first released. After making some of the greatest hard rock of the early '80s, the kings of hair metal had to pump out this album in what Eddie Van Halen described as a "rush job," with half of the record being filled with cover songs. So is this the group's underrated masterpiece? No...this isn't the best Van Halen album...it's actually the funniest.
Eddie is certainly right about the filler cover songs, but covering older material actually gives the band a chance to experiment on Big Bad Bill. As opposed to the fiery licks Eddie would pump out across records like 1984 and Fair Warning, this entire song is a trip back to the ragtime sound of the '20s, as David Lee Roth tells the comical story of Bill getting straightened out by his wife.
This is also a showcase for one of the more charming guest stars on a Van Halen record, with Eddie and Alex's dad contributing a melodic interlude on the clarinet.
Nobody really needed to know that a jazz-pop style of Van Halen actually existed, but once you hear it, you'll never be able to look at something like Panama the same way again.
