10 Best Non-Rock Songs By Rock Artists
3. Session - Linkin Park
Linkin Park was really a hodgepodge of different genres when they got the ball rolling. While they were initially put under the nu metal tag, their angsty form of rock combined everything from electronica to hip hop to metal to straight up pop hooks within the span of 3 minutes. Even though these guys were a hit making machine back in their heyday, they knew when to pump the brakes and let the music do the talking.
Despite the more democratic atmosphere of the group's records, Session is a showcase for turntablist Joe Hahn, who creates a pure sonic soundscape with his beats. As the song starts, we get a chilling ambient intro before Hahn turns the beat around, layering everything from synth pads to classical instrumentation into the mix. Rather than focus on the lyrics of the tune, Session brings to mind pictures of blown out cities, almost like you're watching the aftermath of global destruction.
For a band that could have been branded as nu metal sellouts, Session was a sign that Linkin Park was still just as curious as to where the music would take them as they were when they got started. Most interludes like this can be considered filler on an album, but you've got to be doing something right if you make an instrumental sound this badass.
