10 Best Nu-Metal Albums Of The 90s
9. Machinehead - The Burning Red (1999)
What? Machinehead aren’t nu-metal! While that is technically true in the most part, the The Burning Red was definitely a nu-metal album. If you don’t believe it, just check out Robert Flynn’s re-styled spiked hair for proof.
A true curveball in Machinehead’s repertoire, the new fusion came out of nowhere with the band moving away from their patented groove metal roots. Proving to be one of the most divisive albums within metal, the Machinehead purist disavow the album, but the nu-metal fanbase welcomed it with open arms. The record went on to prove just how potent the movement was becoming by luring in such big, already established names.
The group used a whole host of previously foreign musical components to create their album including disco beats and even rapping, yes, Robert Flynn rapping! The titular Burning Red is the strongest song on the album and a great way for the band to sign off their nu-metal secondment. The purist will dispel the album, but The Burning Red is a sincerely underrated album that many people write off with a close-minded approach to metal music.
The creative risk by the band should be applauded, not disbanded.
