10 Best Nu-Metal Albums Of The 90s

7. Stained - Dysfunctional (1999)

Although Dysfunctional was technically Staind’s second album, it was the first album that exposed them to a mainstream audience through the medium of nu-metal - the album went on to be certified a whopping double platinum.

Prior to the Dysfunction album, Staind were signed by Fred Durst’s Flip record label after impressing the epitome of nu-metal himself with a four track demo, and the album was born. Lead singer Aaron Lewis merged his signature droning vocals with emotionally charged lyrics to create a record that steps right into the middle of the nu-metal movement with the exceptional Suffocate, Just Go and Mudshovel making up the main structure of the album.

Dysfunction feels colder than other album released at the time with a showing of pent up anger and emotion. The almost depressing approach to the lyrical layout of the album become more and more relatable as the album grows on you. It is sometimes easy to overlook Aaron Lewis’ vocal aesthetics and melodic ballads he almost single handedly bought to the metal scene.
