10 Best Number One Rock Albums Of The 1980s

3. Hysteria - Def Leppard

Pyromania from 1983 was British band Def Leppard's first big hit, so, naturally, they were keen to follow it up. Unfortunately, fate had other plans, as their drummer Rick Allen would get into a car accident in 1984 that cost him his left arm.

With the odds stacked against them, the gang from Sheffield had no choice but up their game and prove that you can't keep a good Leppard down.

The end result was Hysteria, which eventually saw the light of day in 1987. Due to its lengthy delays, it was estimated that it needed to sell five million copies just to break even. At time of writing, it's estimated to have sold 20 million worldwide.

An unashamed celebration of glam metal, Hysteria is home to some of the bands greatest songs, from Pour Some Sugar on Me to Animal to Love Bites. In total, it reigned as king of the American charts for six weeks, and remains the group's best-known work to this day.

Considering it could have all gone horribly wrong, Hysteria turned out more than alright in the end.
