10 Best Number One Rock Albums Of The 1980s
2. Appetite For Destruction - Guns N’ Roses
Guns N' Roses could have packed it all in after their first album and still have been regarded as one of the greatest rock groups of the 80s. That's because their debut effort was the monumental Appetite for Destruction.
Releasing in the Summer of 1987, Appetite wasted no time in setting out its stall, as the very first song listeners would have heard upon pressing play was Welcome to the Jungle. Then came tracks like It's So Easy, Paradise City, Sweet Child O' Mine, and Rocket Queen, which reads more like a greatest hits compilation than an artist's first recorded work.
Somehow, it took over a year for this album to reach the peak of the US charts. It would actually enjoy three separate spells as champion, including one as late as February 1989.
None of this matters, as what's important is that Appetite for Destruction got the recognition it deserves for changing the rock game. This was the heavier side of commercial rock at its very best, combining well-crafted songs with killer riffs and kickass solos.
Honestly, everything else that came after from GNR kinda pales in comparison.
