10 Best Number One Rock Albums Of The 1990s
7. Unplugged - Eric Clapton
Getting its start in late 1989, MTV Unplugged would become a staple of 90s musical television, as the biggest and best artists from around the world were invited to play a set without using any of that new-fangled electricity.
The show was extremely popular and it became commonplace for acts to release the recording of their appearance as a live album. Nirvana did it to great effect, as did Mariah Carey (for balance), but this entry is centred around guitar maestro and occasionally controversial man, Eric Clapton.
Slowhand pitched up to the Unplugged studio in January 1992, leading to the release of an album simply titled "Unplugged" later that year. As well as giving his renditions of standards like Alberta and Malted Milk, Clapton also retooled some of his own compositions, including a version of Layla that, in all honesty, is probably better than the original.
Unplugged would top the US charts for three weeks the following March, not a mega-seller by any stretch, but a fantastic representation of a 90s institution and a fantastic set of performances from one of the best in the game.
