10 Best Number One Rock Albums Of The 1990s
6. Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins
Billy Corgan isn't just the owner of a wrestling company and every gourd's worst nightmare, he was also a prolific songwriter back in the day.
The Smashing Pumpkins frontman went into overdrive when it came time to write for the project that would become Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, penning all but two of the 28 songs that ended up crammed onto two discs. This number could have been even larger, but it was decided that 28 was probably the highest figure they could get away with without everyone hating them.
It's not like these songs were all filler; some of Mellon Collie's tunes rank amongst the best Pumpkins songs ever, and the biggest alt-rock anthems of the entire 90s.
Tonight, Tonight, 1979, Zero, Thirty-Three, Bullet with Butterfly Wings, and many more wormed their way into the ears of angsty teens and disgruntled grown-ups all over America, who rushed out in their thousands to buy a copy.
The end result of this was a single week for the album at the top of the charts in November 1995, but that was all it needed to establish itself as a modern classic, silly name be damned.
