10 Best Number One Rock Albums Of The 1990s

4. Superunknown - Soundgarden

Back to 1994 in the grunge world and another release from one of the gloomy genre's big hitters.

Soundgarden were formed in Seattle (like a real grunge band) in 1984, but only started to catch fire after the release of 1991's Badmotorfinger, which proceeded the coming of another album that could have used a space bar, the iconic Superunknown.

From the absurdism of Spoonman to the tinnitus-inducing noise of the title track to the glorious pessimism of Black Hole Sun (which was accompanied by one of the most ridiculous and haunting music videos of the era), Superunknown ran the full length and breadth of the alt-rock gauntlet, tethered together with the impeccable singing voice of Mr. Chris Cornell.

It routinely appears in list of the best albums of any kind from the 90s, and was valued just as highly at the time, jumping to the top of the charts in March of 1994.

How long did it stay there? Just the one week, before it was ungraciously deposed by Ace of Base's The Sign, but look, if you somehow haven't heard this record, put it on right now, and then you'll get it.
