10 Best Number One Rock Albums Of The 2010s
4. …Like Clockwork - Queens Of The Stone Age
Josh Homme is a difficult man to like sometimes, but there's no denying that, when he's on, he produces some otherworldly stuff.
Take for example Queens of the Stone Age's 2013 release, ...Like Clockwork, which is easily one of the best albums of all time to begin with an ellipsis.
This was QOTSA's first album in five years and their first since the death of collaborator Natasha Shneider and Homme's botched knee surgery that almost cost him his life. Thankfully, in the face of all this adversity, the band rose up and unleashed their greatest album to date.
...Like Clockwork is a thrilling, swirling collection of enigmatic and idiosyncratic tunes full of poetic lyrics and explosions of guitar-based joy. Particular highlights include the thumping My God is the Sun, the cool-as-anything Smooth Sailing, and the moody Fairweather Friend, which features none other than Sir Elton John.
In his words, they were "missing an actual queen".
The album enjoyed one week of top status in June and remains the group's only effort to achieve this feat. Maybe they should get back on the phone to Elton, see if he's free.
