4. Marvin Gaye - What's Going On?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-kA3UtBj4MDisguised as a more light-hearted, soul album that Marvin Gaye was known for, What's Going On is a protest record. Gaye said that with all the ills in the world, citing the 1965 Watt Riots and the Vietnam War as turning points, 'How could I keep singing love songs?'
What's Going On introduces the album of the same name and it's lyrics completely contradict the atmosphere of the song. The joyful, hyped chatter of the other people in the background suggests a party, but continues as Marvin Gaye achingly sings 'War is not the answer' or 'Wev'e got to find some lovin' here today'.
At the time, Berry Gordy, owner and founder of Motown records, Gaye's label, spoke with Gaye and when he said he was going to release a protest record, Gordy said 'Marvin, don't be ridiculous, that's taking it too far'. It was voted the 6th best album of all time by Rolling Stone.
It's stylish, laid back and thought-provoking; a feat not easy to achieve in any song. What's Going On perfectly opens the album, setting the vibe and tone for the rest of the record to come.
