10 Best Opening Tracks In Metal
8. Overkill - Motorhead
As the hard rock world was quickly morphing into heavy metal, Motorhead were known as one of the heaviest hard rock bands the world had ever known. With a no-frills attitude and the snarling vocals from Lemmy Kilmister, the band plowed through two albums of hard rock brilliance as they continued to tour relentlessly.
When compiling tracks for their new album, drummer Phil Taylor had just purchased a new set of double bass drums and began to practice on them before Lemmy and guitar Eddie Clarke showed up for rehearsal.
Enthralled by the sound coming out of the booth, Lemmy quickly started to bang away on his bass guitar and proceeded to write the song "Overkill," which would become the title track for the record. While the song has multiple starts and stops, the groove from the double bass drums keeps your heart racing throughout and leaves you delirious by the track's end.
The song's frantic rhythms became the double bass drums heard round the world, as the sound would eventually work its way into all brands of metal from death metal to thrash. With an impressive rock and roll swagger, "Overkill" is the sound of heavy metal sharpening its teeth.
