10 Best Opening Tracks In Metal
7. Stinkfist - Tool
As spellbinding as every Tool release is, the band's opening tracks always seemed to deviate from the typical rage-filled formula. While almost every song across Tool's discography is of a particular high quality, the band's way of constructing albums were more about settling into a groove rather than clubbing you over the head. That is, with the exception of Aenima's opening cut "Stinkfist."
As the opening guitar riffs wash over you, the group starts to bring the more outlandish elements of their later sound into sharper focus. The addition of new bassist Justin Chancellor is a welcome change of pace, as his lines shine across the track's runtime, perfectly complimenting the wild insanity of Danny Carey's drum part. The hook of the chorus as Maynard James Keenan screams "It's not enough, I need more" features riffs that seem to almost push and pull the listener to fantastic effect.
With lyrics that have more vulgar implications, this track was the perfect introduction to an album littered with some of the band's zaniest musical moments. Even though the band's focus was on creating visceral album experiences of heavy metal grandeur, "Stinkfist" was proof that Tool was a band that could stomp listeners into the ground when the time called for it.
