10 Best Paramore Songs - Ranked
2. Playing God - Brand New Eyes (2009)
On a surface level, ‘Playing God’ wouldn’t appear to be one of the more hard-hitting tracks from Paramore. Indeed, the song is relatively light on the ear compared to some of the other material on Brand New Eyes.
What makes it one of the band’s best pieces, however, is the lyrical content and the pretty yet powerful instrumental.
Starting off with a simple and clean guitar melody, ‘Playing God’ quickly delves into themes of hypocrisy and the changing relationships in the band. Such a theme heightens during the chorus as the vocals become more aggressive yet still retain enough control to compliment the lighter instrumental.
As for the bridge, both Farro and Williams share the vocal duties to create one of the most distinctive moments on Brand New Eyes.
Paramore have had a number of singles which have been far more successful than ‘Playing God’, but there’s no denying this track’s ability to balance sweet melodies with an angry yet mature hook and a unique bridge.
