8. The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987)
This album is full of get-up-and-jump, energetic numbers, and Anthony Kiedis’ lyrics are oozing with the sex-crazed bravado that marked his early lyricism.
With not-so-subtle lines like "Party on your p*ssy", these early songs certainly encapsulated the overtly sexual energy the band’s live shows were known for. A theme that was further embodied by a memorable performance in a strip club when each band member wore nothing but a single well-placed sock.
This was the only album to feature all four of the original line-up, with founding drummer Jack Irons returning to the band following the departure of Chris Martinez, due to creative differences. The album would also contain some of Hillel Slovak’s last-ever recordings before he tragically died of a heroin overdose shortly after the 1988 European tour. Lead singer Anthony Kiedis was also struggling with a heroin addiction at the time and did not attend his funk brother’s funeral, instead flying to Mexico to find solace in the substance that had killed his friend.
Drummer Jack Irons would also withdraw from the band following the news of Slovak’s death, leaving the band on the edge of a cataclysmic break up. Despite the ongoing pain of losing a much-loved friend and guitarist, this was not the end of the Chilli Peppers, whose 1989 album Mother's Milk would be a surefire hit (read on for more).
