7. The Getaway (2016)
The second album to feature Klinghoffer on guitar, The Getaway demonstrates what he could really do when he came out of Frusciante’s shadow.
Instead of sticking with long time producer Rick Rubin, the Chilis handed the reins to Danger Mouse, who took a completely different approach to producing. And it worked. The album feels more fully formed than I'm With you – each track is pumped full of energy, and Klinghoffer compliments Flea’s bass and Smith’s drums in way that allows Kiedis’s vocals to gel perfectly over the rhythms.
Some of these tracks really hold their own against more well-known Chilis numbers. Goodbye Angel in particular feels like a reimagining of the 2000s’ hit Can't Stop, constantly building in frantic energy, choruses that explode with pent-up excitement, and psychedelic guitar melodies intertwining with heavy chord progressions. Fleas driving bass swells with rising intensity, and Smith’s surging drum rolls help to move this song to its culmination; a strange mix of frenzied guitar playing, dance-break-style drumming and thumping slap bass. If you’re not making the Jack Black bass face by the end of this song, consult a doctor.
This album really should get more credit than it’s been given, and although the departure of Klinghoffer marks the return of the legendary Frusciante, one can’t help but wonder what would have happened if this line-up had stayed together.
