The former Crazy Horse guitarist had carved out a solo career for himself during the seventies but it was his association with Bruce Springsteen that helped his stock rise even further when he was called in to replace Steven Van Zandt in the E Street Band ahead of the Born in the U.S.A. Tour.

Lofgren brought with him a different, arguably more clinical style that sat in contrast with his predecessor and he remained a mainstay of Springsteen's group until their dissolution in 1989.

When the band reuinited a decade later, both him and Van Zandt were called up for guitar duties, and the contrast between the pair remains part of the pronounced joy of catching the group in concert ever since.
