10 Best Replacement Singers Of All Time

8. Phil Collins - Genesis

The worst part of overcoming losing a lead singer is reinventing your charisma from the ground up. If the guy out front was always exciting and destroyed every audience they played to, how the hell are you supposed to replicate that over again with someone completely new? It's not always easy bringing an outsider into the mix, so Genesis just figured out that the best replacement was already in the band.

Once Peter Gabriel left the prog rock icons to focus on his home life, the search for a singer was painstaking until Phil Collins stepped up to the mic. Having the same type of timbre in his voice that Gabriel had, Collins seemed to reignite the fire inside Genesis, with A Trick of the Tail being as complex and intricate a composition as Foxtrot or Selling England by the Pound just a few years earlier.

Granted, there are still some prog aficionados who argue that this was the beginning of the end, with Genesis soon becoming a pop act in the next few years, with massive chart successes like Misunderstanding and even more doofy material coming off of the album Invisible Touch. Then again, that's what you signed on for in the beginning, right? Prog is all about evolution, so Genesis decided to morph into something completely new and made off like bandits as the years went on.
