10 Best Rock Album Openers Of The 1990s
9. Beetlebum - Blur (Blur)
Whilst Song 2 might have served as a better album opener for Blur, that would have entirely defeated the point of calling it Song 2.
Thankfully, the British band had something equally as good up their sleeve to take its place.
Blur's self-titled fifth album continued their trend of landing right at the top of the UK charts and made the group's first major splash in the United States.
The first thing those Americans would have heard upon giving this a spin was a song that wouldn't sound out of place amongst the indie scene of today.
Beetlebum (a word that has no actual meaning, by the way) was written by Damon Albarn to reflect on his experiences with drugs. You can hear this in the music, which is laid back, hazy, and lethargic.
In a good way, of course.
The song fit right in with Blur's established discography, capturing that cool, detached spirit that had made them such megastars. It was an instant hit with fans, topping the singles charts.
It was also a stark contrast to the second song on the record, which was... come on, we've been over this.
Pay attention.
