10 Best Rock Album Openers Of The 1990s
8. This Is A Call - Foo Fighters (Foo Fighters)
It's been told many times before, but the story of Foo Fighters' self-titled debut album is worth revisiting.
Dave Grohl, still in mourning over the death of Kurt Cobain, hit the studio to record an album by himself just for fun. That album would end up defining the next chapter of his career.
With Grohl the only musician on every track (except for some additional guitar work from Greg Dulli on one song), Foo Fighters is an outstanding achievement however you slice it.
Spawning tracks like For All The Cows, I'll Stick Around, and Big Me, the album was a promising sign of things to come from Mr. Grohl. Oh, and you can't forget about This Is a Call.
Written by Grohl on his honeymoon, This Is a Call retains some of the grunge sound that made Nirvana so big, but definitely has that distinctive Foos feel to it.
The drummer's voice is perfectly unpolished, easily fitting in with the hard-hitting backing track.
He basically nailed the sound of the band first time; yet another indicator that this is precisely what he was put on this Earth to do.
