10 Best Rock Albums Of 2021 (So Far)
2. Medicine At Midnight - Foo Fighters
The Foo Fighters don't really need to prove anything to anyone anymore. Since Dave Grohl has become the loveable uncle of rock and roll from now until the end of time, there's no reason for them to really reach too far outside of their comfort zone all that often. They didn't have to go the extra mile, so why did they actually manage to top their last outing with Medicine At Midnight?
While Concrete and Gold was definitely going for a similar feel to this epic sounding production, Medicine at Midnight feels like a great extension of what that album was trying to do. Compared to the usual rock and roll, this is the kind of stuff that makes you want to lose your mind at a stadium. Even with slow burners like Shame Shame setting the stage, there are songs that are a lot more arena rock than anyone expected. Just the hook of Making a Fire sounds like it could have come off a Def Leppard record and fit right in.
Outside of the usual alt-rock formula that you get from Foos' records, it sounds like Dave has hung around enough with heroes like Paul McCartney that some of those songwriting chops are starting to rub off. Above all else, this just sounds like the Foos having fun, and we all need so much more fun during times like these.
