10 Best Rock And Roll Breakup Albums

1. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac

It would be bad enough for any artist to have to deal with a breakup right in the middle of an album cycle. When you're trying to make some of the best music you can, some of that pent up emotion is bound to come through sooner or later, and might lead to something pretty nasty when you come out on the other side. That's just one messy breakup, but Fleetwood Mac had three to deal with at the exact same time.

During the recording of Rumours, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks had officially broken up, Christine and John McVie were filing for divorce, and Mick Fleetwood was in the midst of a separation with his wife due to his drug dependency. Nothing in that previous sentence points to this record being good, but something about all of that negative energy made them channel it into their material, which made for something a lot more potent when the songs actually came to fruition.

Outside of the internal drama, these songs might be some of the best music that have ever put out, taking the rootsiness of the band's acoustic sound and making solid gold out of it. When you look beyond just the basic construction of the tunes, this album reads like a walking soap opera of emotion, as every song deals with the separations, from Lindsey getting bitter on Go Your Own Way to Christine making her peace with her divorce from John on Songbird. An album like this may have been a nightmare to live through, but for every single member of Mac, music will always be the chain that keeps them together.
