10 Best Rock And Roll Breakup Albums

8. RAM - Paul McCartney

In the acrimonious split between the Beatles, every one of the Fab Four had their own say as to what really happened behind closed doors. As George Harrison carried on with recording songs that he had been sitting on, John Lennon pulled no punches with his audience, saying that the dream of these lovable Liverpool boys was gone forever on his album Plastic Ono Band. Though Paul McCartney may have been the first person to release a solo record, he wouldn't get to really have his say until one album later.

Seeing how McCartney's self titled debut was released before Let It Be, it was meant to just be a way to blow off steam in between the tumultuous sessions for that last record. Now that there was no chance of building bridges, RAM is the first time Paul knew he was on his own, and decided to hide away on his farm and create something much more homespun. Although the record was actually recorded in New York, you can hear that more organic side of Paul coming out in these songs, from the Beatles-esque moments like Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey to the more ambitious sounds of The Back Seat of My Car.

Despite getting some pretty nasty reviews back in the day, the legacy of RAM is a lot clearer now with the benefit of hindsight. This wasn't just some weird experiment where the Cute Beatle lost his way. This was a man coming to grips with losing his best friends and using the entire span of a record to make sense of it.
