9. Ghost Stories - Coldplay
There's a good chance that the textbook definition of the word 'overexposed' could just be a picture of Chris Martin's face. Ever since the days of Viva La Vida, Coldplay's rise as one of the few active stadium rock bands has garnered both love and hate from both sides of the fence, from the beautiful ballads to people who find their music some of the most bottom of the barrel pop rock you can come by. Chris might like to indulge himself every now and again, but it's not like he can't wear his heart on his sleeve when he wants.
Throughout a fairly messy public divorce with wife Gwyneth Paltrow, Ghost Stories had the band stripping things back a lot more, going for songs that had more of an electronic tinge. Though songs like a Sky Full of Stars mark the point where a lot of the rock crowd jumped off the bandwagon, the inner workings behind this record tell a much different story, as Chris goes through the different stages of separation, from reminiscing on the past during Magic to then talking about wanting his old flame back on Ink.
Even if the Coldplay train seemed to be operating at half capacity most of the time, hearing a song like Midnight is a much different flavor for the band, giving you the sense of feeling truly alone in the darkness. Martin would get back into sunnier territory just a few years later, but it's nice to hear the more melancholy side of his work every now and again.
