10 Best Rock Bands From Ireland

9. Fontaines D.C.

These highly literate Dublin rockers have risen to substantial success in a remarkably short period of time. They began releasing their first singles in 2018, with the likes of “Too Real” and “Liberty Belle” pricking up the ears of music fans and the press across the world.

Their first album, Dogrel, came out in 2019 to even more acclaim. Fontaines D.C. play high octane post-punk, indebted to ‘80s bands like Mission Of Burma and Fugazi but with a real youthful spirit. The music is angry and confrontational but varied, too. There’s plenty of rage about the state of the nation and the world at large, but it never feels at all performative, which can afflict other bands of the same genre.

The album was nominated for a multitude of awards, including the Mercury, and finished high on a lot of end of year lists. Tracks like “Television Screens” paved the way for their second album A Hero’s Death, which took a bold diversion from the previous album, demonstrating greater variety and musicianship while maintaining the anger and attack of their breakthrough. The sky’s the limit for these guys.
