10 Best Rock Duos Of All Time
5. Fiery Furnaces
If you like your rock highly conceptual, with albums stretching past the hour mark and songs routinely making their way to double digits with shifting forms and bizarre lyrics, all the while packed with unusual but incredibly catchy melodies, Fiery Furnaces are the band for you. If that sounds like your idea of hell, kindly skip this entry!
Fiery Furnaces are Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger, both of which provide instrumentation and vocals in a multitude of styles and voices. Their first album, Gallowsbird’s Bark, set out their stall with its ramshackle and often playful presentation, but the weirder stuff was yet to come for the prolific siblings.
Their high or low water mark, depending on who you ask, was the expansive 2004 followup Blueberry Boat. It’s packed with unusual instrumentation and songs ranging from the pacy and fun "My Dog Was Lost But Now He's Found" to the challenging, twisting and turning title track. Many loved it - others didn’t.
If the experimental stuff isn’t for you, their 2005 EP is more formally traditional, full of tight songcraft like "Tropical-Iceland", maybe their finest earworm. Certainly not for everyone, but they can find a firm place in the hearts of those who dig it.
