10 Best Rock Music Album Closers Of The 1980s

6. Save Me - Queen (The Game)

Not including the Flash Gordon soundtrack, Queen released five studio albums during the 1980s.

Hot Space finishes with the excellent (if slightly overplayed) Under Pressure featuring David Bowie. A Kind of Magic is seen off with Princes of the Universe from the movie Highlander.

Both of these would have been strong choices for this list, but neither quite measured up to the might of Save Me. The final track on the band's first '80s album, The Game, Save Me was written by Brian May about the breakdown of a friend's relationship. The friend was supposedly Freddie Mercury, which checks out as that man's love life was tumultuous to say the least.

Another power ballad that starts off with a light tinkling of the piano keys, Save Me does well to draw attention to Mercury's vocal performance, which is among his most powerful.

The premise of the song, that the protagonist needs to be saved by a person's love, is universal enough to relate to everyone. This might be why it draws a stronger reaction than a song about two immortals trying to cut each other's heads off.
