10 Best Rock Music Album Closers Of The 1990s

3. Would? - Dirt (Alice In Chains)

Alice in Chains began their 1992 album Dirt with the song Them Bones, and wrapped it up with the song Would?.

Dirt was the band's second album and planted their flag firmly in the dingy, rain-soaked ground of grunge. By the time Would? came to a conclusion, fans were on the edge of their seats waiting for album number three.

The song is a tribute to Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood, who had died two years earlier. Wood was a friend of songwriter Jerry Cantrell, who also performed co-lead vocals.

Not only does the song contain Alice in Chain's standard horror movie style of rock, but it also ties back to its source material in grim fashion. The song just ends; no fanfare, no big playout, nothing. This is eerily similar to how Wood died at the age of just 24 - suddenly and with no warning.

Would? is still one of the band's best-known records, with new fans discovering it to this very day. A thoughtful tribute that just so happens to tick all the boxes.
