10 Best Rock Music Album Openers Of The 2000s

2. Helena - Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge (My Chemical Romance)

The 2000s emo rock scene belonged to My Chemical Romance.

This five-piece from New Jersey's first album - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love - wasn't a massive seller, but what came next sure was.

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge was what really catapulted the band to superstardom. This was the album that gave the world I'm Not Okay (I Promise), The Ghost of You, and fan favourite opening track, Helena.

Written by Gerard Way and partly inspired by the death of his grandmother, Helena is a hard-hitting semi-ballad about loss and grief.

Way is on superb vocal form (improved production standards definitely helped there) and the rest of the band deliver a punk-inspired backing with more musical maturity than they had previously expressed.

Helena was the song that helped make MCR famous, which in turn launched emo and goth rock into the mainstream. Without it, there would be no Black Parade, no Danger Days, and no appearance of the band on Yo Gabba Gabba!

What sort of a world would that be?
