10 Best Rock Music Album Openers Of The 2020s So Far

6. My Own Soul’s Warning - Imploding The Mirage (The Killers)

When The Killers dropped their 2020 album, Imploding the Mirage, many people saw it as a slump-buster. Hopefully the band also thought they were in a slump, otherwise that would have been a hard truth to discover.

Alongside guest stars like Weyes Blood, k.d. lang, and Lindsay Buckingham, the Las Vegas minstrels more than delivered with an album full of emphatic ballads and the songwriting prowess that had made them megastars in the first place.

They wasted no time in setting the agenda, opening with a fiery banger named My Own Soul's Warning. With a title that strong, it had to be something special, and it is.

After steadily building, the song erupts into life in a jazzy firework of synths and guitars. The drumbeat is highly infectious, inviting you to bounce on the spot wherever you might be, and then there's Brandon Flowers.

The lead singer produces a knockout vocal performance in the song's chorus, blasting everyone away with a powerful cry of "I thought I could fly". Honestly Brandon, just try aiming your mouth at the ground and singing, you might actually achieve lift.
