10 Best Rock Music Videos Of The 1980s

1. Money For Nothing - Dire Straits

Whilst it might look like something a two-year-old could create these days, the 3D animation in the music video for Dire Straits' Money for Nothing was game-changing at the time.

Created by animators Ian Pearson and Gavin Blair, the CG portion of this iconic video depicts two very blocky men working in a warehouse whilst the band play live on a big screen. This is very much in keeping with the themes of the song, which is about a working class man getting angry at the success of "talentless" musicians.

This must have looked like something from outer space to people in 1985. There's a reason this thing was on such heavy rotation on MTV back in the day - there was simply nothing else like it out there.

The song also cleverly pokes fun at the station that commissioned it, showing background footage of astronauts planting an MTV flag on the moon. Mark Knopfler just couldn't help himself, could he?

For its ground-breaking visuals, clever humour, and its place in history, the video for Money for Nothing is our pick for the greatest of the entire decade.

Also, it helps that the song absolutely bangs.
