10 Best Rock Music Videos Of The 1990s

7. Closer - Nine Inch Nails

When a music video opens on a shot of a still-beating human heart pinned to the back of a chair, you know you're in for a wild time.

In 1994, Trent Reznor's angst factory - aka Nine Inch Nails - achieved its first major commercial success with the song Closer.

Taken from the unbelievably good Downward Spiral album, Closer was intended to be an anthem of self-hatred, but accidentally became one of the horniest songs of all time due to *certain* lyrics in its chorus.

Come on, you know the ones we mean.

The video is anything but sexy. Well, unless you're into cockroaches, severed pigs heads, and a monkey being crucified.

And if you are, then that's fine. No judgement from us.

There's no real story to this video; just a collection of bizarre and sadistic imagery designed to offer an unfiltered look into the inside of Reznor's demented creativity.

Whilst its depictions of dead animals, nudity, and religion might seem a bit cliched now, that's only because videos like the one for Closer made it so.

At this time, this freaked people all the way out, and that's just rad.
