10 Best Rock Music Videos Of The 1990s
4. Black Hole Sun - Soundgarden
Kim Thayil of Soundgarden once said that the band were never really that pleased with any of the music videos made for any of their songs.
Well, with a few notable exceptions.
One was the accompanying film for their incredible song Black Hole Sun, which was released in 1994.
As the band play the song off in a field somewhere, ironically looking like they'd rather be anywhere else, the video follows the lives of various inhabitants of a picture perfect slice of suburbia.
The various residents of this dreamy town tend to their gardens, watch TV, and prepare dinner. They've all got grossly exaggerated grins on their faces too, like they've been forced to smile with some sort of Clockwork Orange-style torture device.
Things soon go downhill for our middle class subjects, as the sun above their heads begins to spew black ash and bathe the town in a hellish glow. Meanwhile, Soundgarden are still chugging away, seemingly revelling in the apocalypse.
An obvious critique of American society, this video provides unmatched visual effects for the time and is full of images you won't ever be able to get out of your head.
