10 Best Rock Songs Of The 2020s (So Far)
5. Seventeen Going Under - Sam Fender
Since Sam Fender broke out, proud Northerners have been singing his praises and lauding him as the new face of British rock. His early tracks were intriguing ventures into the realm of indie rock. But, despite the acclaim his first record received, he could have easily gone the way of an overly produced pop star.
You could see this guy becoming the type of musicians who receives the moniker of 'rocker' because he happens to strum a guitar every now and then. But, that doesn't seem to have happened with Fender. His new record has seen a marked development in his song writing ability. Benefiting from a larger band-sound, and now, seemingly confident enough to lean into his Geordie accent, Fender is only going from strength to strength.
With a working class background, and a backing group borrowing heavily from The E Street Band, Sam Fender was always going to be hailed as the Northern English Springsteen. But this guy has the story telling chops to back it up. Seventeen Going Under marries the sound of American-heartland music with a Northern English accent, and it's a refreshingly, pleasing combination.
