10 Best Rock Songs Of The 2020s (So Far)
6. Girls & Boys - Viagra Boys
Although they might look and sound like a bunch of punks from London, these tattooed sporting, groove making rockers, hail from Sweden. Seemingly out of nowhere, they dropped their debut album, Street Worms in 2018. They followed it up with the equally enjoyable, Welfare Jazz at the start of 2021.
The record was a melding of punk rock and and new-wave dance beats, all mixed up with satirical lyrics that explore themes of modern living, drug abuse and machoism. The fourth single, Girls & Boys, was a prime example of how fun these guys can be.
First and foremost it's got energy. The rhythm section combines a driving dance beat with a fat and fuzzy bass line, giving the track momentum. Lyricist, Sebastian Murphy, delivers his minimal spoken word vocals throughout a verse, before you're treated to saxophone-rich bridge. The chorus gives Murphy a chance to show off his pipes, as he expresses a wish to burn down the nonsensical aspects of society. The odd touch of guitar, heavily distorted by a wah wah pedal, makes the song reminiscent of Electric Six, if they'd teamed up with new-wave punks, X-Ray Spex.
