10 Best Rock Songs Of The 2020s (So Far)
3. Fleabag - YUNGBLUD
YUNGBLUD is a fairly polarising character. Zoomers love him but anyone born after 1995 seems to find him irritating. On the one hand, he embodies many of the sensibilities that feed into the idea of a modern rock star. He has the look, he embodies progressive ideas and he's got charisma. But his sound has tended to lean on the commercialised side of things.
The initial reaction to this track might be negative. And it's understandable. He's pulling straight from '90s and early 2000s rock almost shamelessly. Using the two opening chords from Smells Like Teen Spirit is undoubtably gonna draw attention. And, the borrowing doesn't stop there, the chords during the bridge lay somewhere between Boulevard of Broken Dreams and dare I say it... , Nickelback's, This Is How You Remind Me.
Now, this might sound like the most heinous garbling of the most loved and hated sounds in rock, but don't be so quick to dismiss it. Once you get over that intial reaction you realise this guy knows how and when to deploy his influences. He's undoubtedly pulling from the past but his rooting his sound and vibe firmly in the present.
This guy keeps getting more and more interesting, he just needs to stop making music with Machine Gun Kelly.
