10 Best Sequel Songs In Rock

7. Hemispheres - Rush

Rush have been known to indulge in some more extravagant song structures during their tenure. Hell, you don't nickname one of your songs "An Exercise in Self-Indulgence" and not be in on the fact that your songs can be a bit difficult for the average listener to take in. Then again, the real self-indulgence comes with a song spread out across two albums.

While other bands make sequel songs well after the first one was written, the Cygnus-X1 saga was something that these guys had been cooking up since it was first conceived. Appearing first on the album A Farewell to Kings, Cygnus-X1: The Voyage talks about a man exploring a black hole, only to be sucked in in the process. Though it would be a great idea to leave his fate open-ended at the end of the song, we got our answer on Hemispheres.

As the 18 minute track opens up, we find our hero soaring through the cosmos and even coming across different celestial beings in his travels. Once we venture back to safety, the narrator not only finds himself more in tune with himself, but also everything in the universe. For a band that gets written off as the rock act for nerds, this epic saga feels like reaching musical nirvana by the time you've finished the long journey.
