4. Anthem Part 2 - Blink-182

In the early days of Blink-182's career, there wasn't too much that really needed to be thought about. No matter how much their music spoke to you, it's hard to really find any poetic significance in something like Dysentery Gary or The Party Song. Despite having another crude album title with Take Off Your Pants and Jacket, the first song showed Blink going for a more aggressive approach.

While the shimmering pop guitars are still out in full force, Anthem Part Two feels like the rowdy younger brother of the closing track from their previous effort. Whereas the first version of the tune had to do with the struggles with trying to be a teenager in suburbia, this newer version shows Tom Delonge in a much more angered state. Instead of just blaming everything on being young, this is where the teenage melodrama turns real, with Delonge looking forward to what the future might hold for these punk kids.

Even though the parents are still the primary target here, the chorus of "if we're f*cked up, you're to blame" is exactly the kind of rebelliousness that teens wanted to hear at the time. It also doesn't hurt that this new lineup has fully settled in at this point, with Travis Barker firmly cementing himself behind the kit as he plays off every single riff. It might scream pop-punk for a certain subsect of fans, but if you're looking to start some sort of teenage revolution, you can certainly do much worse than this.
