10 Best Sequels To Incredible Albums
8. Ryan Adams - Love Is Hell Pt. 2
Alternative country crooner Ryan Adams wanted to release ‘Love Is Hell’ as his fifth studio album until his record company Lost Highway didn’t think the album would be a commercial hit. As a result, Ryan, to his dismay and disillusionment, initially had to release the album in parts - a music equivalent of Quentin Tarantino being told by Miramax that he could only cinematically release Kill Bill in two installments.
So ‘Love Is Hell pt. 1’ was released as an EP in November 2003 (which includes his astonishing cover of ‘Wonderwall’ that’s racked up more than 75 million listens on Spotify) and ‘Love Is Hell pt. 2’ was released a month later in December. Love Is Hell pt. 2 is particularly emotionally gorgeous, with Ryan chewing over his emotions and fears on tracks ‘My Blue Manhattan’ and ‘I See Monsters’. It’s a gut-wrenching record about broken hearts and battling your own bleak despair. It’s such a departure from the generic rock sound that was found on his ‘Demolition’ and ‘Rock n Roll’ albums that came before his Love Is Hell EPs. The album’s dark turn was partially inspired by The Cure’s classic ‘Disintegration’.
Thankfully, when the EPs sold much better than expected, Lost Highway released Love Is Hell in full the following year to enjoy as it was intended.
