10 Best Sequels To Incredible Albums
3. Queen - A Day At The Races
Queen considers ‘A Day at the Races’ a sequel to their beloved ‘A Night at the Opera’. Just look to the titles after all, with A Night at the Opera being named after the famous Marx Brothers film, just like A Day at the Races is named after the Marx Brothers follow-up film.
A Day at the Races cost roughly the same as its predecessor to make too, along with the artwork and themes running through the record being comparable. It includes the classics ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ and ‘Somebody to Love’ that produced mass singalongs in arenas and stadiums. Freddie Mercury’s love and inspiration from Aretha Franklin is evident on Somebody to Love with his liberated gospel-like vocals.
When it was released in 1976, A Day at the Races was regarded as a disappointment and underwhelming, given A Night at the Opera was so well-liked by the British public. With time though, it’s grown in appreciation as a companion piece. In a national 2006 BBC poll, A Day at the Races was voted the 67th greatest album of all time. It’s a complicated, grandiose album. While not as well regarded at A Night at the Opera (to be expected – it’s Queen’s best record), it still serves as a fantastic sequel.
