10 Best Songs About Becoming An Adult

4. 1979 - The Smashing Pumpkins

Most of the '90s rock scene wasn't all that considered about the passage of time. Whether it was the dreary sounds of Seattle or the rest of the alt rock boom happening across the US, the order of the day seemed to be about dread and despair rather than the existential side of life. If you were going to find anything that was nostalgic, you'd have to find someone who's been around the block a couple of times.

After coming off of Siamese Dream, Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins had come up with a grand concept for Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Though the album may have been the band's most adventurous outing yet, the most jaw-dropping moment came on "1979," as Corgan paints the picture of him outgrowing his childhood.

For as downtrodden as the song can seem, Corgan still manages to make the nostalgia pour in, as if he only has to close his eyes to be back in his hometown wreaking havoc on the streets. It gets even more poignant when you watch the video, as you see these young kids tear up their town without a care in the world. Those days may be gone now, but where's the harm in taking a look back to see how it all worked out?
