10 Best Songs By The Who

3. Pinball Wizard - Tommy

The first single from 1969's rock-opera Tommy, Pinball Wizard tells a story from the perspective of the "Local Lad", a pinball champion who witnesses Tommy, the titular Pinball Wizard, and how "that deaf, dumb and blind kid, sure plays a mean pinball."

This is a song that expertly demonstrates the raw energy behind The Who, fuelled by the never-ending momentum that is Keith Moon on the drums, who stands out here with frantic drum beats give the track a charged rhythm

The blend of acoustic and electric guitars works tremendously well, with the two distinct parts weaving in and out of each other throughout the song, making for an interesting composition. Sandwiched between songs about childhood trauma and songs about becoming a cult leader, Pinball Wizard is a refreshing burst of energy whenever it is played.
