7. Lukin - Pearl Jam

Length: 1:02

The lives of Pearl Jam's members were getting pretty hectic by the time they went in to record No Code. After years of trying to adapt to the rock star lifestyle, this record feels like a catharsis as each member hammers out their dissatisfaction with their sudden rise to the top. Things were getting pretty weird, but "Lukin" wasn't messing around when it came to rocking out.

For as much as people would want to skip this track, "Lukin" has a pretty distinct story to tell, with the title referencing Matt Lukin from the Melvins. During the recording of the album, Eddie Vedder was dealing with a stalker problem when a woman kept showing up at his house claiming to have been raped by him. Though he eventually settled the matter in court, Vedder wrote this punkish thrasher as a tribute to Lukin, whose house he would crash at while trying to avoid his stalker.

It may sound like just raw aggression being thrown at you, but there's a real darkness behind this record, with Vedder talking about how uncomfortable he is about his privacy and getting terrified when he learns that his stalker now has a gun. No Code wasn't holding anything back, but "Lukin" has enjoyed a great shelf life and has made for a great live cut whenever the band dusts it off.
