8. Paris
An unexpected one here, perhaps?
Paris, from I Like It When You Sleep For You Are So Beautiful And So Aware Of It, is a deceptively upbeat song about the end of a relationship between a shallow, vain woman and a depressed, nihilistic, substance-abusing (and lying about it), adulterous boyfriend.
Hard to imagine there would be an upbeat sounding song in that, right? But the band achieve it, with their now well-established mix of juxtapositions of total sincerity with irony and jokes. The music is typically, for this album in particular, '80s-inspired, with a descending bassline/chord progression and a chorus that invokes a longing and nostalgia for something you’ve never even experienced; something the band in general possess a particular aptitude for doing.
Standout lyrics:
Mr. Serotonin Man, lend me a gram/ You call yourself a friend?/ I got two left feet and I'm starting to cheat /On my girlfriend again/ And there was a party that she had to miss/ Because her friend kept cutting her wrists/ Hyperpoliticized sexual trysts/ Oh, I think my boyfriend's a nihilist/ I said, hey kids we're all just the same/ What a shame
