3. If I Believe You
A down-tempo, atmospheric track from I Like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful And So Unaware Of It, here Matty Healy - or the narrator - flirts with belief in the face of his inner turmoil. As with most of Healy’s lyrics, there is a good deal of dry, irreverent humour thrown in here to counterbalance the heaviness of the subject matter.
The opening lyric "I’ve got a god-shaped hole" has always smacked of an Always Sunny In Philadelphia reference; such pop cultural nods not being uncommon with this group. The instrumentation is sultry, with a velvety, luxurious horn solo, and soaring choir backing vocals. Healy, or the narrator (whichever you prefer), contemplates God and wonders whether his lack of belief is preventing him from feeling like he has a purpose in life.
The song fades out slowly with the repeated refrain of "If I’m lost, then how can I find myself?", leading the album into a prolonged and largely instrumental period, continuing the themes of feeling lost that this track establishes so well.
