10 Best Twenty One Pilots Songs

9. Addict With A Pen – Self-Titled (2009)

Twenty One Pilots’ debut record makes for a fascinating listen. It may not have the consistency of some of their later albums, but Joseph’s skill as a songwriter still shines through.

‘Addict with a Pen’ is the most well-known song from the band’s debut, and it’s easy to why. Faith and religion form the backbone of this tune with Joseph’s lyrics addressing God directly. He apologies for not being ‘the best of sons’ and pleads for forgiveness and guidance.

Whilst Joseph’s rapping is far from his best, the track resonates with the listener owing to the simple yet impactful piano melody and the vocal delivery. Indeed, the section where Joseph sings about being dismissed as a ‘suicidal headcase’ is wrought with pain and a sense of defeat.

‘Addict with a Pen’ certainly isn’t a track for everyone owing to its emphasis on religion. Yet it’s still a great example of Joseph’s ability to write outstanding lyrics.
