10 Best Twenty One Pilots Songs
8. Holding Onto You – Vessel (2013)
‘Holding Onto You’ was the first single released by Twenty One Pilots after being signed to Fuelled by Ramen. Though there are undoubtedly better tracks on Vessel, ‘Holding Onto You’ is a great introduction to the band.
One of the best things about this track is the structure. Whilst the opening does follow the usual verse-chorus formula, the rest of the song is impossible to predict. The lengthy bridge is especially interesting as it contains a light, melodic piano section followed by an angry rap verse from Joseph.
As jarring as ‘Holding Onto You’ can be from a structural point of view, it certainly isn’t hard to latch onto owing to how catchy it is. The electronic synths during the chorus work wonders alongside the chanting vocal lines and Dun’s percussion.
Vessel is such a hard album to label because it’s stuffed full of genre changes and unusual song structures. But if you want to get a taste of this phenomenal record, ‘Holding Onto You’ is a good place to start.
