10 Best Twenty One Pilots Songs

7. Pet Cheetah – Trench (2018)

Trench – though not as popular as Blurryface – is a strong contender for the band’s best work. Joseph and Dun refined their abilities into a cohesive concept record that manages to blend accessible singles with more experimental tunes.

‘Pet Cheetah’ is an odd track. The electronics create a dark, mysterious atmosphere that’s enriched by Dun’s detached percussion and the moody vocal style. The second verse is especially good, with Joseph delivering one of the catchiest moments on Trench.

But this dark atmosphere changes abruptly during the chorus. The tempo drops and the song becomes dreamier and more spacious. It’s here that Joseph addresses the difficulty of trying to be creative and describes the slow, arduous process of writing music.

The ambient-style chorus doesn’t really fit with the verses or the explosive ending. But because ‘Pet Cheetah’ is about the challenges of creating music, these imperfections only add to the song’s message.
