10 Best Two Guitar Bands
7. Megadeth
When Dave Mustaine was sent packing after getting the boot from Metallica, he returned to California with a renewed anger and energy to create a band that would leave his metal brethren in the dust. Quickly after forming Megadeth with David Ellefson, Mustaine had the desire to have a band with two lead guitarists.
Across the band's discography, Mustaine's leads have been beautifully intertwined with some of the most chaotic metal guitar players the genre had ever seen. Starting out with Chris Poland's more jazz-inspired techniques, the band hit their stride when Marty Friedman was drafted to bring guitar masterstrokes like "Holy Wars" and "Hangar 18" to life. Even while singing, Mustaine's leads are some of the greatest runs for rock guitar, whose speed many hopeful guitarists have to wait years to achieve.
Over the years, the guitar slot in the band has fluctuated but has always remained consistently strong from the classical bent of Chris Broderick to the latest pyrotechnics being brought by Kiko Loureiro. Whether Metallica or Megadeth is the better band is still up for debate in metal circles, but any guitarist will tell you what Mustaine has created with Megadeth's guitar attack is nothing short of perfection.
